My name is Koto Bolofo and i was born in South Africa,Lesotho, 13 November 1959 and i am a self taught photographer. Our family status for 24 years had been political refugees living in exile in Great Britain.
I attended a Art and design college in London. The course was for 5 years and in our second year we were introduced to a 3 week compressed photography lesson. I spontaneously fell in love with the printing side of photography. The experience of being in the Darkroom and illuminating and exposing a dim source of light onto a White piece of paper, then moving and dodging your hands in between the dim light, then immerse the white paper into the first solution and SUDDENLY an image out of no where appears, for me that was like ancient sorcery, VooDoo!! in the dark.
Eventually after skipping 2 years of classes because of my "love affair" with photographic printing and taking photos, i was eventually expelled from that College. This made me more determined to carry on and continue to teach my self and develop a signature and style in my photographs, till eventually Italian Conde Nast took me under there wings where i became a regular and contributing photographer.
In 1988 the GRAND MASTER RICHARD AVEDON left several voice mails on my telephone stating that he was a fan of my work and that he would like to meet me and look at my personal photographic archives.
It was one of the greatest enriching and inspiring visits i had ever had in the early part of my career. Richard insited to me that i maintain my style and signature and continue having the timeless quality in my photographic works. Soon after he left to New York, the following week i received his book entitled, "IN THE AMERICAN WEST" RICHARD AVEDON.
Opening the book was a large hand signed autograph of Richard Avedon, which read, "FOR KOTO BOLOFO WELCOME FROM DICK AVEDON 88". During the same year i made my way to New York where Richard welcomed me with open arms.
My first appointment he made for me was to meet Alexender Liberman at American Conde Nast who congratulated me in regards to my photographic work.
Lastly, i would like to say that all photographs after having a LONG career and still many more years ahead, along with my private projects, ALL the photographs are hand printed by my printer which i am ALWAYS present in the Dark room to over see and give a precise judgement. I can only say the VOODOO!! is still working.
